A photo circulated on social media from Quinnipiac University students: a case of Coors Light on a police car. It is a visual capturing what “May Weekend” is like for students at the college. It is a single weekend dedicated to partying before the year ends, but it has been mainly on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This 2022, it returned stronger than ever despite most students only hearing about the event through upperclassmen friends.
Fraternities went all-out for this May Weekend, and local restaurants even planned events specifically for Quinnipiac students.
Aunt Chiladas, dubbed "Aunchies" by students, hosted a day-long Bagels and Booze event. The entire establishment was filled with young, drunk adults who called Ubers after it ended to move on to the next celebration.
“It’s great because I can drink all day and fucking party all night,” slurred David Rosenbaum, a fraternity brother who was experiencing his first May weekend.
One party was even rumored to top a headcount of 1,000 students. It was promptly shut down by Hamden PD, as were most of the other events. But one fraternity party survived. Usually, fraternities are not allowed to mix. May Weekend was the exception.
“May Weekend is a time where, you know, all politics in terms of organizations go out the window and everyone’s just looking to have a good time,” said Frankie Malabanan, one of the officers of Alpha Sigma Phi. He allowed in anyone who was looking for a fun day.
Social media photos detailing the weekend were simply captured "May Weekend", and friends knew what they were referencing. This was a welcome back to a classic tradition known by many at QU.
